In life or in business there are many factors that will affect the degree of success we’ll have. The definition of success can be a very personal thing. Many people expect success but haven’t created their own definition of success leaving them feeling frustrated.

Here are 4 fundamental keys to creating your own success:

1. Set goals, make plans and have a vision

“The tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It isn’t a calamity to die with dreams unfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not disgrace to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for. Not failure, but low aim, is a sin.” Benjamin Mays

If you don’t know where you’re going, how are you going to know if you’ve succeeded? Having specific goals and plans will allow you to avoid frustration, stay motivated and give you direction. A specific goal is a goal that includes an action plan that summarizes how you will accomplish the goal, and a performance measure that tells you how you will evaluate the goal. Setting goals will also mean that you will actively be working at getting to an end result. Success doesn’t usually just happen, it requires work.

Don’t forget: Your goals need to be relevant, actionable and achievable.

2. Believe

“The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.” Sven Goran Eriksson

To be successful we often need to step out of our comfort zone and take some risks. Our own perception of our ability to achieve our goals is frequently what stops us from taking action. Face it, being in control of every situation is not possible but the way you handle the situations and bumps in the road will make the difference.

Don’t forget: You have to believe not only that you can achieve your goals but also that you have all the right tools to deal with the unexpected.

3. Commit

“Commitment is the enemy of resistance, for it is the serious promise to press on, to get up, no matter how many times you are knocked down.” David McNally

After making decision you have to fully commit. You can’t be half way into something and still expect the same results. Being committed when things are going well is not so difficult but the opposite is not so true. Persistence, knowing your own limits and having the right mindset will help you work through most challenges.

Don’t forget: By understanding what you’re actually getting into and what it will require from you to achieve your goals will make it a lot easier to stay committed.

4. Follow through

“Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.” Mark Victor Hansen

Excuses, excuses…stop self imposing road blocks! If you set your goals, made plans, believe in what you’re doing and are committed, the last step will be to actually act on your goals and plans. If you find yourself being distracted from achieving your goals, stop and think about your priorities and consider if what is distracting you is rightly justified. There will always be unforeseen factors or people trying to discourage you, that’s life! If you stay focused on the bigger picture and really take charge of your life and actions you will do what is needed to achieve your goals.

Don’t forget: To increase your chances of succeeding and to ensure that you will follow through, share your plans with others around you so that you really become accountable for your actions and will also encourage them to respect your choices.
